Lessons in Leadership: My Third-Year Anniversary Founding Telemetry

Three years ago, a vision to create an integrated approach to communications gave birth to my agency, Telemetry. As its founder, this journey has been an exhilarating and enlightening process of learning and growth, successes, setbacks, and many invaluable lessons. But one such lesson came into focus that has dramatically shifted my leadership approach.

Like many founders, my instinct was to be involved in every aspect of the business during the initial years of our company. My focus on every detail was essential for maintaining the company’s vision and standards. Over time, I have understood that while this perspective is rooted in a desire for excellence, it can inadvertently limit the growth of my company and my teammates.

The most illustrative example of this realization occurred recently. After deciding to move homes, I needed to take weeks off to ensure a smooth transition for my family – something I hadn’t done in years. Initially, the thought of stepping away from my business for such a significant period was unnerving. However, the experience served as a real-life experiment in delegating responsibility and empowering my colleagues to not just keep the business running, but strive to exceed our value day after day and week after week.

In my absence, I witnessed my team rise to the occasion. They made strategic decisions, addressed client concerns, and navigated unexpected challenges. Upon returning, I discovered a team that had grown more confident, cohesive, and invested in Telemetry’s success.

This experience has profoundly underscored the importance of trust in building a successful company. By loosening my grip and providing my colleagues with the autonomy they deserved, I encouraged them to take ownership, be creative, and grow professionally and personally. I’ve realized that empowering our team to make decisions isn’t just good for morale, it’s good for business.

As we enter our fourth year, I aim to continue building upon this foundation of trust. I am keen to delegate responsibilities further, nurturing a culture that empowers every team member to contribute their unique strengths to our shared vision.

I want to take a moment to extend my sincerest gratitude to my team at Telemetry. Your dedication, adaptability, and unwavering support are the backbone of our success. Here’s to another year of growth, success, and trust in one another.

Onward!
